Catherine Herfeld has published a new paper in Synthese, titled "Enhancing the Function of Case Studies: The Value of Network Analysis in Integrated History and Philosophy of Science."
The article appears in the topical collection Digital Studies of Digital Science, edited by Charles Pence and Luca Rivelli.
In this work, Herfeld investigates how network analysis — a method borrowed from the sciences — can address methodological challenges in Integrated History and Philosophy of Science (&HPS). She argues that network analysis can improve how case studies are used to generate, refine, and justify philosophical concepts.
While recognizing its potential, Herfeld also emphasizes that network analysis should complement, not replace, traditional philosophical methods.
